Martinsville is a small town in Chatham County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Martinsville was George Washington and his family who arrived in 1784. Some historians believe that this event may have helped lead to Ewell's suicide four years later when his unit was surrounded and surrendered at Appomattox Court House during the surrender of Richmond to Ulysses S. Grant after three days of battle resulting in over 200 casualties including Ewell himself When Johnson County was created from parts of Chatham andleton counties on November 3, 1865, Martinsville Manor was included within Johnson County limits for all purposes (including taxation). On March 15, 1867, Martinsville Manor passed into Federal jurisdiction following Virginia's admission to the Union via Congress' Unification Bill which gave all states equal representation in Congress without regard to their relative size or population numbers - thus making Martinsville one of only two municipalities within Virginia still governed by local governments despite being located outside metropolitan areas such as Norfolk or Richmond proper (the other being Winchester). At its creation, Johnson County contained an area larger than any other county within Virginia except Loudoun County which had been formed several decades earlier from portions of Fairfax and Prince William Counties plus bits around Falls Church & Manassas Junction etc.).
