Martin's Tavern was a tavern in Martinsville, Virginia which operated from 1771 to 1812. The tavern is significant as it is the first known business in Martinsville and the first brick building in the town. The tavern was located on North Main Street between Second and Third Streets. It was built by John Martin, who also founded the town of Martinsville. In 1771, John Martin married Anne Morehouse, Sr.'s sister. Anne Morehouse, Jr., established a school in Martinsville which she ran until her death in 1800. In 1772, John Martin moved his family to Martinsville and opened his Tavern at 5 South Market Street. It was here that he met and married Mary Todd Young. The couple had one child, John Adams Martin (1774-1861). In 1802-03, John Martin leased land on South Market Street for $75 per year to build a house which he called "The Hermitage". When it became clear that the inn would not be able to continue operating due to financial difficulties, JohnMartin sold "The Hermitage" to his son-in-law Sam Packer for $5 per month rent in 1811. In 1812, George Washington visited Martinsville and stayed at The Hermitage while visiting nearby Balmes Ford Battlefield where he engaged in battle with Major General James Wilkinson prior to his inauguration as President of the United States on January 20th of that year. Upon his return home late that night after engaging Wilkinson's forces near Mount Vernon House outside of Richmond County Courthouse Square, Washington ordered all artillery batteries within two miles of Mount Vernon fired upon him resulting in his death as a result of friendly fire during what has been referred to as one of history's greatest military engagements ever fought. After George Washington's death on November 15th of that year from natural causes at Mount Vernon House following an extended illness throughout much of 1814-1815 including travel up north along the Potomac River Valley during winter months (the coldest period on record), power went out throughout much of Fairfax County resulting in widespread starvation due to lack thereof. However despite this natural disaster which caused great suffering amongst many residents who were left without food or shelter for days or weeks after dark, various businesses managed by those remaining began reopenings martinvilingvahistory beginning with George Mason & Co., general store at 9 North High St., Isaac Brockman’s Brewery at 11 North High St., Mr Biddle’s Store at 12 North High St., Mrs Gwynn’s Schoolroom (later renamed Middle School) at 13North High St., Samuel Morse’s Telegraph Office (later renamed Post Office) 2 West Broad St.
