Martinsville is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond-Alexandria-Petersburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Washington and his Mount Vernon crew on October 16, 1775 as an Army outpost on the Fairfax River with barracks and stores for their troops. The original name of Martinsville was Middlebrook because of the high water mark on Meadow Road where a mill had been built by John Martin in 1727. In 1821 Martinsville became one of the towns in Loudoun County when it was included within Fairfax County. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army camped near Martinsville while they awaited supplies from Alexandria. On November 11th, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Martinsville with 3 brigades and set up camp nearby without battle or conflict; however this event served as a turning point for military strategy in Virginia due to Confederate commanders believing that Grant would not cross the Potomac River again given his recent victory at Second Bull Run and his concerns about potential Union forces advancing on Richmond if he did so. After the Civil War ended, Martinsville reverted back to its original name Middlebrook until 1955 when it changed to its current form of Martin's Valley after James A. Martin purchase of land from local farmers in that year Martin's Valley contains many old homes dating back to before World War II including those located off Northern Parkway which are said to be some of oldest white frame houses in America . There are also several golf courses located throughout Martinsville including Kingwood Country Club which has been home to two Presidents (Ulysses S. Grant & Franklin D Roosevelt) as well as numerous other celebrities such as Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe, etc...Martinsville continues to grow despite lack of industry or major development taking place outside what is typically considered "the city". However there have been recent efforts by developers such as brothers Brenton and Kyle Richards who have purchased tracts of land adjacent to Interstate 95 within walking distance of most residents

Martinsville is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, United States. The population was 7,000 at the 2010 census. It is part of Martinsville-Winchester Township. The name "martin" means "a rock or boulder." This was given to the community by settlers because of the abundance of rocks that could be found thereabouts. The first settler in Martinsville was James Martin who came overland from England in 1775. He and his family erected a log cabin on what is now Route 111 near present day Winchester. In 1776, James Martin's son John built a house on land that he and his wife Susannah had purchased from Captain John Smith for £2 per acre. They named their home West Point after Mount Vernon where George Washington lived during his presidency (the original home of Mount Vernon). In 1801, Colonel John Marshall set up a toll booth along the Potomac River at Martinsville to collect money from travelers passing through Virginia en route to points northward. In 1812, Major General Nathaniel Banks organized an expedition against Fort McHenry which resulted in the Battle of Baltimore Heights. At this battle, Union forces under General Robert Ewell destroyed Fort McHenry while Confederate forces under General Richard Henry Lee fought off repeated assaults by Union soldiers before withdrawing across the Potomac River into Maryland. After this engagement, Banks decided not to pursue further attacks against Northern targets and turned back toward Washington D.C.. In 1840, James Hargrave moved to Martinsville with his family and founded a cotton plantation called Noonday Hill which became one of America's largest cotton plantations when it was sold in 1865 to Thomas Wirtz Jr.. For many years until its closure in 1984, Noonday Hill produced more than any other plantation in Virginia for two major commercial interests: 1) as an export center for agricultural produce; and 2) as an important training ground for young Virginians who later would become leaders in business and industry
Forty-six slaves were brought over to Martinsville in 1753 by Captain John Smith. The community was founded on the Nottoway River, about a mile from present-day Martinsville. The first white settler in Martinsville was James Fenton, who arrived in 1754. In 1764, Colonel Thomas Johnson moved his family to Martinsville from Stafford County, Virginia. In 1802, the town had a population of 100 people. The first school inMartinsville was organized in 1753 and operated for four years. A second school opened in 1756 and continued operations until 1806 when it closed because of financial problems. The first post office was established at Martinsville in 1764 and continued operation until 1800.
