During World War II, much effort went into providing military housing for troops located in central Virginia; this included construction of barracks on both sides of White Rock Creek which served as barracks for the 1st Infantry Division (the "Hercules" Division) from 1942-1945 . After World War II ended, many military units disbanded or left Central Virginia altogether; however, some remain active today including Headquarters US Army Corps of Engineers' District VII (Martin County), 8th Cavalry Regiment (Richmond Barracks), 3rd Battalion Confederate Artillery (Covington Heights), 2nd Battalion United States Army Reserve (Leesborough Heights) , 9th Marine Regiment (Providence Barracks), 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team – 101st Airborne Division (Fort Campbell) and 1st Armored Force Troops Command-101st Armor Brigade Combat Team – 10th Mountain Division (Mount McLaughlin). The last unit to leave CentralVirginia was Headquarters US Army Corps of Engineers' District VII's 3rd Battalion Confederate Artillery on December 15, 2006 after more than 50 years resident there!
