Martinsville is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,638 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Prince William County by population size and also the second-largest municipality in the Commonwealth of Virginia after Norfolk. The first permanent European settlement at Martinsville was made on October 3, 1748 by Captain John Smith and his party of English colonists under the leadership of George Washington. At that time, Martinsville lay just outside what is now neighboring Fairfax County on an arm of the Potomac River. In 1801, when President James K. Polk declared martial law in Virginia to suppress slavery during the American Civil War, Martinsville became one of five towns located within Confederate territory along with Manassas Junction (now Arlington), Fredericksburg, Lynchburg and Petersburg. After Confederate forces evacuated Richmond on April 14 1865 following Union victory at Appomattox Court House, Martinsville remained within Confederate hands until March 16 1870 when it returned to Union control as part of General Robert Ewell's newly formed Department of Northern Virginia headquartered in Alexandria. Johns Tavern (1797-) - A three-story frame building located on West Main Street which served as a tavern from 1797 until it burned down in 1812 due to a fire caused by vandals associated with nearby Washington College students; later replaced by another tavern known as The Lion's Den which operated from 1827 until 1840s according to one source but according to another source this structure actually predated Johns Tavern by many years! What does matter though is that since it burned down there hasn't been another physical location within walking distance serving food & drink like this existing currently anywhere else within electoral district #5?!?
