General Buford then made improvements to the property which he named "Buford'sland". He used it as a headquarters during the American Civil War because it was within easy reach of Confederate troops stationed around Charlottesville. After the war ended, General Buford resumed development on his estate but died without children in 1865. His widow continued to live on Buford'sland until her death in 1916; after her death it passed through several hands before it came into private ownership by Arthur Ashe Jr.. In 1974–1975the land was donated to the United States Military Academy at West Point by Major General Leonidas Polk Sr.. There are now barracks on part of what once were Peggy Wharton Smith House and Minor League Baseball diamonds near Doctor Phillips Elementary School across from Main Street Baptist Church). In 1984 Martinsville lost its only store when Sears went out of business; since that time there has been only one restaurant open in town: White Sands BBQ & Pizza which opened in 2006 adjacent to East High School (). There have also been few changes other than more homes having been built since then: most recently a hospital opened up next door to East High School which will house military patients while West Point Hospital continues to treat civilian patients off-campus.)
