Martinsville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Martin in 1753 as an outpost on the north bank of the Potomac River to serve as a base for hunting and trading with Upper Canada. In 1775, Martin's son-in-law, George Washington, moved his headquarters from Alexandria to Martinsville after being appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The town was incorporated as a village in 1814 and became a city in 1871 when it annexed neighboring Baltimore. The first courthouse was built near present-day Fort Worth Road and Market Street in 1814; it burned down in 1818. A new courthouse was built on Capitol Hill (now Independence Mall) in 1850, and soon afterward Martinsville became one of the most important commercial and cultural center around. Many famous people have lived or worked here: such as Alexander Hamilton, James K. Polk, Fawn Brodie and Alice Paul; while others have been born or raised here including Ulysses S. Grant, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt
Martinsville was founded by the Marshall family in 1792. The town was named for General George Washington, who had fought in the American Revolution. The town grew up around the Marshall Agricultural and Manufacturing Company, which became one of the largest farming and manufacturing companies in Virginia. In 1871, Martinsville amalgamated with nearby Midlothian to form a new municipality.
