Martinsville is a town in Chatham County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke Rapids, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Martinsville was Captain John Smith in 1607. He named it "Morton's Ford" after Lord Morton who surveyed the area for the new British colony of Virginia. The first permanent settler in Martinsville was James Moultrie in 1781. He built a sawmill and gristmill on Branch Creek. In 1811, General Robert Ewell visited Martinsville and ordered all male residents between the ages of 20 and 40 to leave for military service during the War of 1812. Many men from Martinsville enlisted in Ewell's brigade and fought in various battles across America before being discharged at home or returned home to their families later that year. In 1829, Colonel George Washington bought land along Branch Creek around what is now downtown Martinsville from James Moultrie for $1600 (). Washington founded Winchester College there and developed it into one of America's leading educational institutions with its fine brick buildings still standing today on Main Street near where US 1 intersects I-64/I-95 exit 9A (the old main street). In addition to Winchester College, which continues to operate as an private institution today with many distinguished alumni including several U2 members, other early colleges and universities located in or near Martinsville include Randolph–Salem Female Seminary (now Randolph-Salem University), William & Mary School (now Williamsburg University), Lynchburg Male Seminary (now Lynchburg University), Richmond Female Seminary (now Richmond Institute), Christopher Newport School (now Christopher Newport University) and Stonewall Jackson High School (later known as Western Military Academy). A few dozen homes still stand in downtown Martinsville dating back to these early years—a reminder that education has always been important hereabouts. One milestone associated with martinvillette history came when President Franklin D Roosevelt made his famous speech from inside Winchester College on April 12th 1941 – one day after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor – calling for American resolve against Axis aggression worldwide During World War II much of what is now downtownMartiansvillewas destroyed by bombing raids by Japanese bombers over central Virginia on September 15th 1944; most extensively called "The Great Fire." Only a few blocks north of Main Street were storm shelters set up due to severe weather conditions that included winds gusting up to 100mph! All but two blocks north remained destroyed although someluckily survived as high rise residential structures such as those pictured below remain standing today: Most notably however Lilly Pulitzer designed her apartment building at 635 Main Street which survive intactTodayand serves as anexampleof post war architecture within reachof everyone including studentserrandedherefor college degrees Most people forget about this period during World War II because our media sensationalized everything happening outside Hollywood; alas recent discovery(s) about just how dangerous WW2 could have been might change all that! By 1928, all handguns had been replaced by machineguns so it wasn’t necessary to build another handgun safe separate from your regular home armory. Gun safes gradually began becoming less common as they were superseded by newer technologies such as computerized locking systems and digital fingerprint readers (DFR). However, they remain popular among collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy owning antique firearms or working with specialcodes or unlocking devices
