In 1871, the first gun magazine in Martinsville was established by John R. Anderson and W. H. Heckscher. The magazine published a journal called the "Martinsville Advertiser" which was distributed throughout Martinsville and surrounding areas. In 1892, the first issue of "The American Rifleman" was published in Martinsville and it remained an important publication until 1959 when it merged with "The Shooter" to form "American Rifleman & Shooter". In 1911, the company changed its name to Winchester Repeating Arms Company and began producing Blackpowder rifles under the Winchester name alone. From 1916-1920, they produced a rifle called the Model 1903 (originally known as the Winchester Model 80) which became very popular among shooters all over America. During World War I, Winchester produced over 1 million rifles for military use across all branches of service; during World War II they produced over 2 million rifles for military use across all branches of service including tanks, planes, boats, artillery and more! Today, Winchester continues to produce high-quality firearms under various names including Remington Arms Company and Savage Arms Company. During Prohibition years (1912-1921), Martinsville also played host to one of Virginia's most famous gun shows where thousands of people would come to seeAmerica's favorite beverage being sold by independent sellers from all around town! This event is still remembered today and is celebrated annually on November 5th as Gun Show Day in Martinsville!
A recent study by the Crime Prevention Research Center at Northeastern University found that gun magazines can contain up to 20 rounds of ammunition, which could potentially result in a shooting if someone is able to take advantage of the magazine’s multiple openings. Additionally, there are reports of people being able to open fire from inside magazines containing fewer rounds, potentially resulting in injury or death. Despite these risks, it is important for individuals who own or use firearms to be aware of their potential uses and keep the magazine empty when not in use. The Crime Prevention Research Center also recommends that all gun owners practice safe storage procedures by storing guns in a locked container and removing any ammunition from the weapon before leaving home.
In 1836, John Brown and five of his men took up arms against the local militia in Martinsville. The men were met with gunfire, and Brown was shot and killed. The fight continued as officers arrived to help take care of the combatants. Ultimately, only two men were killed, one by a stray bullet from a cannon battery and the other after being hit by an arrow through the heart.
Martinsville is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, located about 20 miles northeast of Charlottesville. It was founded by General James Martin in 1759 as an early settlement on the western edge of what is now Martinsville County. The population was 581 at the 2000 census. Martin's son, Joseph, built a mill here and it became one of America's first large mills. In 1837, John Taylor moved his family to Martinsville from Gloucester County and opened Taylor's Mill. The mill produced flour for local markets and also manufactured cannons for use in the American Revolution. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Martinsville and riots occurred after he came to town to campaign for reelection. The president left town before any more unrest could occur. The mill closed in 1971 but reopened in 1984 as an antique store inside the old mill building. In 2006, it was sold to a group of investors who plan to demolish it and build a new shopping center on its site next to Interstate 66 east of Martinsville University (MTV). Today, Martinsville is home to two churches – First Baptist Church which has been around since 1827 and Second Baptist Church which was built in 1906 on land that once belonged to the Taylors. There are also several small businesses within walking distance of most residents including restaurants, convenience stores, hardware stores and pharmacies. 2/9/2018

Martinsville was a small town in Virginia before the American Revolution. The town was founded by John Martin, who arrived in 1776 and became a part of the British colonies. After the revolution, Martinsville continued to exist as a small community until it was destroyed in 1814 by fire. Today, Martinsville is a ghost town that is only visited by RECREATION VISITORS. The history of Martinsville goes back to at least 1776 when John Martin arrived in Virginia with his family from Wales. He built a cabin on Harrison Ford's land and started trading goods with local Native Americans. In 1781, JohnMartin built a house on what is now called Franklin Street. He also started selling tobacco products to English people. In 1814, after the Battle of Yorktown, General Robert Ewell's army burned down many buildings in Martinsville because they were afraid of Indian attacks. This destroyed much of the old village and left behind only few structures still standing today such as the Martin House and Jackson Tavern. Today, RECREATION VISITORS can visit most of the remaining buildings from earlier years during springtime when they are open for visitation from 9am-4pm Mon-Fri; 9am-3pm Sat & Sun; closed Dec 1st & Jan 6th (Christmas).
The Martinsville Speedway was a NASCAR race track located in Martinsville, Virginia. The track opened in 1909 and hosted the first NASCAR event ever, the 1911 American National Auto Race. In 1942, the track was renamed "Nowhere near as good as it used to be" due to budgetary constraints. The name change was short-lived, as the track re-opened under its current name in 1951. The racetrack closed for good in 1975 after more than fifty years of racing.
