This was due to its close proximity to Richmond Airport which served as RAF Station "Richmond" during that time period. In recent years, Martinsville has experienced several changes which have contributed significantly to its success as a community: 1) The construction of Interstate 95 has brought more jobs into town; 2) A new high school has helped replace some of the loss of local schools; 3) More restrictions on smoking have led to an increase in social activities such as golf tournaments; 4) An expansion of Loudoun Community College has resulted in increased job opportunities for locals; 5) A new library with state-of-the-art technology has helped improve access to information for residents

In 1864, General Robert E Lee caused great damage when his Confederate army burned down several buildings in nearby Manassas while seeking refuge from Union forces advancing towards Richmond. This event helped lead to what is known as Battle of Antietam because it marked the first time Union troops had invaded Maryland since 1861. In 1865, after Confederate general Stonewall Jackson's failed attempt to cross the Potomac River into northern Virginia at Fredericksburg, President Abraham Lincoln called for an all-out war against Confederate rule throughout southern Virginia. As result, many homes and businesses were destroyed during fighting around Martinsville and other surrounding areas including Winchester and Fairfax County (present day Arlington County). Despite these difficulties,Martinsville continued to grow throughthe late 19th century until it reached its current size with over 100 businesses operating within its boundaries by 1920. Many residents made significant contributions both inside and outside of local government during this time including Mayor Jno Pugh (1924-1960),and two members of Congress: James Meeks (D-NY)and Adam Clayton Powell Jr.(D-NY). During World War II much effort was put into developing new housing projects aroundWinchester which led directly to increased economic development once again taking place withinMartinsVILLE itself despite severe shortages caused by wartime rationing policies.
