These schools have remained mostly unchanged since they were established over 100 years ago; both provide excellent educations for their respective populations with few opportunities available outside of these institutions for most residents. In addition to its reliance on private education, Martinsville also has one primary public school which serves grades Pre-K-12th: Highland Park Elementary School . Although this school is not very large - enrollment averaged 197 pupils per class from 1998-2002 - it provides anadequate educational resources for its students due to its location close to major transportation arteries and shopping malls within walking distance of each other as well as several churches which provide extracurricular activities for their students during day care hours (although these children must also walk another half mile uphill).
