In 1859, General James Ewell Richardson decided to move his headquarters from Winchester to Martinsville after learning of Confederate activity along the Potomac River valley (now Maryland). He renamed it "Richardson's Headquarters" in honor of General Richardson himself. By 1865, when Richmond fell to Union forces at Appomattox Court House following three weeks of bloody combat, most residents of Martinsville had either evacuated or fled southward for safety – except for a select few who chose to stay to rebuild their homes and businesses following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln. During Reconstruction times [1865–1877] most people living near Petersburg were forced out of their homes due to rising tensions between white Southerners and black northerners[1]. This also affected MartinsVILLE as more than one hundred African American slaves lived on parcels of land owned by white landlords outside city limits[2]. Most blacksmiths worked for whites until 1862 when they too were suddenly free because war contracts ended slavery throughout much of America[3]. Many African Americans returned home after hostilities ended but some continued working underground while awaiting new opportunities[4]. In 1984 part of downtown MartINSVILLE housed an upscale department store which closed its doors after forty years[5]. Today portions of downtown are used as office space by several companies such as AECOM,[6][7] JBL,[8], FedEx Ground,[9][10] as well as residential neighborhoods such as Bishop Park[] 11 miles north east across I-95 from Downtown Norfolk VA
