In 1828, James Winchester and his brother David invented the first effective shotgun. A few years later, at the age of 25, Winchester opened a small store in Martinsville, Virginia to sell shotguns and pistols. In 1836, Winchester was granted a patent for an improved rifle that became known as the Winchester Model 1856. The following year, he married Mary Todd Lincoln and began production of rifles and other firearms in Martinsville. In 1860, American Civil War began and soon Martinsville became a key military town with many soldiers moving into the community for their equipment. By 1865, Winchester had produced over one million rounds of ammunition for firearms in Martinsville alone. In 1898, America lost its Spanish-American War and many of the weapons made in Martinsville were destroyed or sold off to individual owners. However, some remaining artifacts from this time period can be seen today at the Arsenal Museum located in Martinsville.

In 1775, during the American Revolution, General George Washington and his army marched through Martinsville on their way to battle against British forces at Saratoga. The town was renamed for John Marshall, one of the founders of Washington's government. In 1871, when Virginia became a state,Martinsville became its capital and remained so until 1973 when Richmond took over that role. In 1978, Martinsville became an all-girl school district and has since been known as "The Girls" District. Today, Martinsville is a small but vibrant community with many businesses and services available to its residents including a large number of cultural events and museums each year. Its downtown is home to two shopping malls - One Stop Mall and JCPenney Centre - as well as several restaurants and bars.

Martinsville is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The first people to live in Martinsville were the Rappahannocks. They arrived in 1757 and built the first trading post there. In 1821, John Marshall founded Marshalltown on the site of present-day Martinsville. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a military fort and its role as a transportation hub for goods from nearby plantations and indentured servants. By 1830, Martinsville had become one of the most important slave markets in Virginia because it served as an intermediary between buyers and sellers. In 1848, General James Kapp captured Fort Frederick (now Old Fort Kapp) and burned it to the ground after his army defeated Confederate forces during the Battle of Fredericksburg. This event ended slavery in Virginia and began what has been called "the Great Emancipation Proclamation." As a result of this victory over slavery, many slaves who had been living in rural areas around Richmond were able to escape into freedom. Many people from Martinsville moved to Richmond so they could be free too. In 1865, following World War I, Martinsville became an important center for munitions production because it was located adjacent to several large factories that produced ammunition for both America's war effort and Japan's wartime efforts. The town suffered significant damage during World War II when Allied bombing raids destroyed most of its buildings including much of its infrastructure; however, few residents were killed as a result of these attacks because most residents fled or escaped before they could be attacked by Nazi troops or bombers). After World War II ended, many businesses closed down throughout Virginia due to changes in economic conditions and competition from interstate highway construction projects which increased commuting distances between cities nationwide. However, some businesses reopened such as telecommunications companies which developed new business practices such as providing modem service over phone lines without having customers come down to their homes). The area now known as Martinsville was first settled by the indigenous people of the Virginia River Valley. The area is named for General James Martin, who fought in the American Revolution and received an award from George Washington. The town of Martinsville was founded in 1750, and became a major trading center during the early 1800s. In 1814, Martinsville was incorporated as a town within Fairfax County. In 1828, Martinsville became part of Richmond Township. In 1897, Richmond Township merged with Fauquier County to form a new county called Arlington County.
