By 1800, there were over 100 people living in Martinsville. The town was originally called New Market because it was near new marketplaces where goods could be bought and sold. At its peak, Martinsville had a population of 1,500 people and 100 businesses. During the Revolutionary War, Martinsville furnished troops for General Washington and played an important role in supporting his forces both at home and abroad. After the war ended, many Virginians decided to stay in Northern Virginia instead of returning home to fight on behalf of Britain. Some individuals also decided to migrate southward into what is now South Carolina due to acres given away as rewards for service during the revolution. However, others such as Captain John Brown (1775-1845) settled in what is now Prince William County specifically because he felt that he had been wronged by London during the Revolution and wanted revenge on those responsible for his capture and death at Harpers Ferry some years earlier. Captain John Brown's settlement at present day Martinsville began as a small cabin located on Hagerstown Road about three miles west of present day Petersburg. He named his new community after Lord Fairfax which led him to believe that it would become one of many Loyalist settlements throughout southern Virginia should Congress decide not to support King George III's cause during the French/American War (1763-1765). Captain John Brown may have also hoped that this would provide him with some financial assistance should he ever find himself confronting pro-British forces again within his own borders." A group effort including laborers hired from around Richmond helped plant trees, build fences and erect other infrastructure necessary for development such as water wheels used for irrigation purposes; these early pioneers are considered key players in developing MartinsVILLE into an thriving community today."
