Martinsville, Virginia is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1865, General John C. Fremont founded the town as a stop on his march from Winchester to Richmond after becoming lieutenant general in the Union army and winning an important victory at Manassas Junction. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the route of much later Medicaid President Lyndon B. Johnson's famous "Great Society" speech which was delivered there in 1964. The first store opened in 1865 and by 1868 there were four stores and seventy-five residents living in Martinsville. The first post office was established in 1870 and mail service began operation that year between Martinsville and Winchester. In 1876, a school was built and named for Genl John C Fremont with classes beginning in September of that year. By 1880, Martinsville had 10 businesses with 1,500 residents and two churches; one Episcopal and one Methodist. In 1886, three more businesses were added: a flour mill (founded by Elisha Moberly), a lumber yard (owned by William Hinton) and a farm (owned by James Waddell). In 1898 when Confederate troops burned down part of Martinsville during their retreat from Appomattox Court House they destroyed almost everything within 3 blocks of the courthouse including over 100 homes! This event has been incorrectly chronicled as being one of Martinsville's most infamous sightings because it did not cause any damage or loss but rather served as an inspiration for future acts of vandalism against government property throughout the Confederacy After Reconstruction ended in America following World War I, business activity slowed until it resumed successfully around 1930 when new immigrants arrived seeking opportunity while also supported by local farmers who withheld land from others to make way for them The economy improved through World War II before slowing again during peacetime due mainly to technological advances which impacted manufacturing but also farming which led to increased demand for goods made abroad However starting around 1970s growth picked up again spurred primarily by job growth at nearby Norfolk Naval Shipyard where many families moved into Martinsville after purchasing homes there
