In 1865-1866 Confederate General Robert Ewell conducted an invasion of Northern Virginia through Loudoun County by marshaling forces at Antietam Creek near present day Arlington Cemetery and crossing over the Potomac River into Maryland before retreating back across the river toVA under cover of darkness. Some 1,500 Union soldiers were killed or scalped during this operation including Ulysses S Grant who had been ordered not to engageEwell because he knew that any battle would result in American casualties numbering in the thousands (as opposed to Confederate losses which could be easily estimated at about forty).
