By 1800 there were over 100 residents living in Martinsville. Many of these early settlers worked for Joshua Frye beginning in 1801 as a blacksmith and tool maker at Frye's sawmill on present day Market Street. In 1812 Frye moved his business to what is now the State House Square where he operated a successful grocery store until his death in 1830. His son, Amos Frye (1800-1868), continued operations until 1865 when he sold out to James Buchanan Associates which became known as James Buchanan Tobacco Company Limited Partnership which still operates today as one of America’s leading producers of cigars and cigarettes
