In 1777, George Washington and his Continental Army were besieging the city of Yorktown in Virginia. The British had been able to reinforce their forces and were now pushing the Americans back. To complicate matters, several American warships had come up behind the fleet and opened fire on the forlorn hope of humanity. One such weapon was a hand-held flashlight, known as a lighted pistol or hunting rifle flare. The firstflashlight was created by an inventor named Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1879. He designed a small light that could be carried around with one hand and could be used to signal for help or signal other units while firing at range. These devices were soon replaced by more powerful weapons like rifles, so Conte decided to create a new type of flashlight: the portable electric torch! Manassas,Virginia is a small town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 25,471 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and is home to Arlington National Cemetery and the Manassas Battlefield National Monument. The town began as a farming community in 1777 on the east bank of the Potomac River near modern-day Arlington County. By 1840, however, many residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Virginia or Maryland due to economic depression caused by notes issued by Andrew Jackson during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). The influx of German immigrants during World War II led to increased demand for goods produced in nearby Prince William County; however, little development occurred until after World War II ended when a number of families decided to stay put after experiencing great promise for their children's education within commuting distance from downtown Manassas (then called Arlington). He named it after General George Washington. The first settlers of Manassas were mainly farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables for their own consumption or sold them at local grocery stores. A school was built in 1824 and serving grades one through twelve was the only public education available until 1870 when a courthouse and jail were built. In 1858, the Monongahela Railroad came through Manassas Valley and soon there were mills, farms, churches and homes producing everything from flour to cotton plantations. By 1865 there were over 1,500 people living in Manassas Township with an average of 100 acres of farmland. due to its strategic location along railroad lines throughout much of Virginia during World War II— particularly within easy striking distance of major military installations such as Norfolk Naval Base—Manassas became an important center for defense manufacturing during the war years. Many Navy vessels had their moorings here while repairs were made to her engines; MANFRED Corporation’s main plant operated out of this township from 1942-1945.
