Union General Ulysses S Grant quickly drove them back with heavy losses while Confederates retreat en masse across "the Burnside Bridge", giving up any hope of taking Richmond before winter set in. As development expanded throughout Fairfax County during this time period, Manassas began to lose its importance as a farming center due to increased access to larger markets in Northern Virginia and Alexandria metropolitan area. However, it still retains some historical significance due to its location within easy driving distance of both Arlington National Cemetery and Georgetown University as well as Reagan Library in Washington D.C., making it an attractive place for residents looking to visit or live nearby.
