By 1775 most of present-day Manassas had been settled and included three roadsteads: Upper Manassas (later Limekiln Point), Lower Manassas (later Westmoreland Heights), and Thoroughfare Road (later Route 1). In 1781 General George Washington's army besieged New York City during the American Revolution; Army engineers built Fort Monroe around Upper Manassas for use as an artillery battery. James Bowie diverted supply shipments from Fort Monroe so that its guns could not be used against Washington's army, thereby sparing much civilian damage during the siege. In 1871 part of Arlington County became part of Fairfax County; this portion includes today's eastern edge of Manassas Township including Lowerman Heights and Westmoreland Heights neighborhoods within Arlington County proper while still including some rural portions within Fairfax County itself outside Prince William Forest Park boundaries This change left much unincorporated territory along Interstate 66 between Northern VA suburbs Winchester, Sterling Hill etc., as well as all but one block or so of Beltway 9 between Dulles Airport/Old Dominion University/Ballston Spa & I-66 Exit 355 which forms Rockville Town Center adjacent to UScontinental Apartment Management District - near McLean House barracks barracks built by Rufus King prior to World War II
