Manassas, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. Manassas is one of three towns in Prince William County and the county seat. The other two are Martinsville and Centreville. The first settlers to what is now Manassas were German farmers who arrived around 1750. They named their new land "Nunnemutland" after Nicholas Mann, an Englishman who had surveyed the area for the British government. By 1811, some American Revolutionary War veterans had landed here from Maryland and Virginia to fight for independence from Great Britain. After the war ended, many of these veterans returned home and started families. One of these veteran fathers-in-law, James Patrick McDonnell (1763–1839), began developing this area into a commercial center by building a store on Main Street in 1824. In 1829 he married Anne Fairfax Randolph (1775–1847), daughter of George Randolph (1751–1820). This association with George Randolph helped give rise to Manassas's nickname "Randolph's Town". After John Forbes built his mill on Upper Big Branch Creek in 1795 (later known as Upper Big Branch Mine Run), more people began arriving in search of profitable agricultural ventures in this part of virginia because it was still mostly undeveloped forest when they did so. By 1800 there were over 200 residents living hereabouts and by 1810 there were over 300 residents! Potash mining followed soon thereafter but local potatoes would not do well against massive competition coming from adjacent states such as Kentucky and Tennessee due to soil weaknesses that made them vulnerable to pests; however James P McDougall managed to get his hands on some good quality potash while working for Colonel Patrick Ferguson at Fallingwater near Harrisonburg – making him one of Virginias502 leading entrepreneurs during its earliest years! In 1830 anti-slavery activists founded the Norfolk & Western Railroad which ran parallel through Hatfieldsburg Junction just north of Manassas Junction where they met up with another abolitionist group called the Society for Moral Reform led by Drury Lane Baptist preacher John Cranch (1768–1837) – giving birth to manhattans ideas about wagon roads across America! However despite all efforts by railroad promoters like Captain Daniel Boone himself during 1830s & 1840s throughout VA., nothing came about until after entrepreneur James Dandridge bought out Captain Boone’s interest in February 10th 1849!!! On that date Dandridge organized a group including prominent men including Congressman Josiah Henson (& others) hired 5 men especially furnished wagons drawn by steam engines hauled our goods 54 miles downriver from Fredericksburg!! To make way for this important enterprise Dandridge also began construction of a large 42 foot long brick wall along RR tracks thus becoming one of “the first developers” within this rapidly growing community!!! And what became known as “Dandridgetown” quickly took form almost overnight……….This colorful history continues right up until present day with numerous businesses locating here including JCPenney(!!!)NCR…Dow Chemical Co., Verizon Wireless….. etc etc….. A stroll thru downtown today will reveal several old industrial buildings dating back before WWI that have found new life as apartments/condos/etc……….. Today’s town has come roaring back thanks largely to its entreprenuership class culture which includes highly respected institutions like JCPenney (!!!) NCR…Dow Chemical Co., Verizon Wireless….. etc etc…………………. Consequently much evidence supports claims made hereinabove that Manassas has experienced significant growth since its incorporation intoPrinceWilliamCountyonApril 1st1994!!!!! !!

On July 14, 1861, Confederate Brigadier General Jubal Early attacked Ulysses S Grant's army at Antietam; although Grant managed to defeat Early's force without loss, many key Confederate generals escaped prosecution or punishment following the battle. This occasioned great public concern throughout Northern Virginia over whether or not Virginians would secede from the Union if slavery continued to be Charlestonized within secessionist South Carolina - fears which would ultimately prove unfounded. However, following Abraham Lincoln's win in November 1860 election as president of the United States over Andrew Johnson (a slaveholding Democrat), Southern Virginia began a process known as " Reconstruction" which aimed to re-establish white supremacy while protecting black civil rightsTorsof state power across all levelsof society while avoiding any form of social or economic inequality between races.). This effort ultimately failed - violence broke out between whites and black soldiers during Reconstruction years leading up to World War II - with African Americans disproportionately victimized by Klan violence and poverty (the Ku Klux Klan originated inNorthern Virginia).
