Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 54,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington– DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. A post road from Manassas to Winchester (now West Falls Church) was first surveyed by George Washington in 1755 and named for Lord Shadwell's estate on the Potomac River. A log cabin and store were built there in 1756 by Captain John Smith and his family as their home until they moved to Alexandria in 1757. Cookstown, about southeast of Manassas, became the first permanent African American settlement in Fairfax County when Timothy Leary arrived there with his family in 1834. The area now comprising Manassas was first settled by Native Americans around 1800. The area now known as Manassas Junction was part of Prince George's County until it was split off from Prince George's County on April 14, 1861, when Virginia voted to secede from the Union. The new county included all of Arlington Heights except for what is now Manassas Junction; this change followed a referendum held on April 10 that year to allow white citizens of Prince Georges County to vote not only within their own county but also within Arlington Heights itself without having to leave their homes. In 1864 General Ulysses S Grant ordered an attack against Confederate forces near Appomattox Court House which resulted in over 620 casualties including many men who lost their lives during the bloody Battle of Fredericksburg two days later In 1865 General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a three-day battle that left more than 6500 dead or missing across four states including 5000 killed by Confederate gunfire at Christmastime

After years of growth and progressivism during the 1960s and 1970s, however, ManASSAS slowly lost its identity as an agricultural town during the 1990s and 2000s due to suburbanization within commuting distance from downtown; this has also led to increased crime rates in town center areas. Despite these challenges, recent efforts by leadership including Mayor John McCarthy have begun to reverse some negative trends over the past few years by creating new businesses opportunities in decaying old buildings within town limits; overall initiatives are intended to increase public support for revitalization plans which hope to bring about long-term positive change for ManASSAS future
