In 1838, the first holster in Manassas was patented by Joel Wilkinson. The holster was made from horsehide and had a belt loop that could be used to fasten it around the waist. It was primarily used for self-defense.
Manassas was a small community located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The town was established in 1777 by Colonel George Washington during the American Revolution. The town was destroyed in 1865 by Union forces during the Battle of Manassas. The town was originally named Saratoga after General John Burgoyne’s army headquarters at Saratoga Springs, New York. After the battle, General Burgoyne decided to rename his army’s command post Saratoga Heights and moved his headquarters there after his victory over British troops at Saratoga on September 17, 1777. In 1779, Colonel Washington reopened the post as Manassas and continued to use it until its destruction in 1865. The first settler in Manassas was Captain Jameson who arrived from Rhode Island in 1684. He built a cabin near present day Manassas Junction and started trading with other colonists along the Susquehanna River. By 1688, Captain Jameson had acquired land north of what is now Manassas Junction and began developing it into a settlement called Mechanicsville or Old Mechanicsville because many of its early occupants were mechanics who worked for local farmers. In 1692,Captain Jameson married Mary Scott (died 1698) daughter of Colonel Robert Scott of Richmond County, Virginia and they founded what became known as Scott’s Station or Scotts Station because their familyowned farm extended down to that location. In 1702, Captain Jameson purchased additional land from Nicholas Winchester which included present-day Arlington Cemetery and built a fortification around it to protect his settlers from Native Americans who lived near them on fertile soil rich in tobacco plants. Over time, other families also bought tracts of land withinpresent-dayManassasJunctionandsettledthereaboutsbetween1702and1765becauseofthepromisinglocationofthisregionforgrowingflour crops,. Forbes found ample valleys sufficient for farming where he named these areas Alexandria Downs (later Alexandria), Fairfax Court House( later Fairfax), Prince William Court House( later Prince William), Braddock’s Landing(later Stonewall Jackson’s Landing), Pittsylvania Court House(later West Point) etc., thus giving birth finallyto Mount Vernon – home not only of George III but also nearby Mount Airy!, Strawberry Mansion – once known as Friendship Tavern where President George Washington danced attendance upon King George II on two occasions while living at Mount Vernon prior to his inauguration as president; Muddy Patch – today's Takoma Park - where Draben White lived with some slaves before emancipation; Broad Run – one mile wide stream that bisects present day Arlington Cemetery; Powder Keg Swamp – an area still thickly wooded over part thereof; Indian Fields intersecting Sandy Run hundreds of yards southwest thereof just before its confluence with Broad Run ; Potomac River — navigable by vessels up to thirty feet deep including canoes — extending northwestward about seventy miles parallel With the latitude line thence running northeastward about eighty miles To cross said river at Ford's Inn on Deep Creek thence turning westwesterly about one hundred miles To reach our present position we traveled nearly four hundred miles! At first Captain Jameson used only mud dwellings made out of hickory logs covered with earth without roofs or windows since there were no stores nor means either locally or downstream for heating or cooling these simple dwellings during summer months since he relied primarily upon hunting grounds closeby for food both meat and game dursto avoid roasting outdoors during long hot summers like those experienced earlier in North America .
