The Battle of Manassas (1862) was a battle fought in the Virginia Peninsula. The Union army under General Robert E. Lee attacked Confederate army under General Ulysses S. Grant, and while the battle resulted in a Union victory, it also caused many casualties on both sides.
Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 34,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax County. The first European settlers of Manassas were the Catonsville Company, led by James Caton, who arrived on October 25, 1775. The company built a log cabin and named it "Catonsville" after their leader. The first white child born in Manassas was Sarah Cathcart on November 11, 1776. By 1820 Manassas had a population of 150 people and was considered to be part of Arlington County. On April 14, 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army to surround and attack Union General John Pope's forces at Gaines Mill; when Confederate Lt.-Gen. Thomas J Smith refused to retreat and lead his troops into battle against Pope's larger force he was court-martialed and executed. On May 10th 1861 Edmond Lewis Moore offered arms to Virginians in support of secession from the United States; on July 15th 1861 thirteen soldiers from Fairfax County enlisted with Confederate Colonel John Smeaton as part of an irregular cavalry unit known as "Moore's Rangers." On September 12th 1861 Maj.-Gen Samuel Prentice Butler called for volunteers for duty in Southern Virginia under Confederate command; these men were eventually organized into Companies A (4 companies), B (3 companies), C (2 companies) and D (1 company). On December 9th 1861 Captain John Waddell reported that 2 detachments from Company A had deserted en route to join General Butler; this report may have been related to news that General Robert Ewell had detached 1 brigade from Hardee's Army to march southward towards Lynchburg instead of returning home to garrison Richmond pending further instructions from Confederate headquarters. In March 1862 Captain Waddell reported that 5 men deserted from Company A while stationed at Suffolk Court House; all but one member of this detachment subsequently reappeared within two weeks after being discharged by their commanding officer due to illness or injury sustained in service. In 1863 Captain Waddell reported that 3 more deserters had joinedCompany A since February 1862 - this number would later increase to 10 members before finally reaching 20 members by late summer 1863 when hostilities ended. This growth in desertion must have been caused by both the decreasing quality of food available within Confederate ranks due torict supplies given offensives near Rome Ford outside Petersburg as well as increased influence exerted by Major-General Jubal Early over units stationed there. At least some officers must have become frustrated with early battlefield losses including those inflicted at First Manassas Church which killed 620 Confederates between Christmas Day 1864 and January 1865 - many casualties could not be repaired owing primarily to lack of manpower or materiel.Manassas: history & culture

Manassas is an unincorporated community in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. It lies on the Potomac River east of Manassas Junction. The community was founded in 1819 by General John Forbes and his men as a stop on their march from Fairfax to Williamsburg. In 1849 it became a post office under the name of Manassas Station. The original town was laid out by Forbes, with a small village at its center which served as the only legal settlement within walking distance of the river bank. By 1830 there were 10 dwellings, 5 stores and 2 hotels in the town proper. By 1840 there were 30 dwellings, 10 stores and 3 hotels in all of Manassas Junction—the most developed section of the then-extant area. The first post office was established at Manassas station on December 6, 1849; it was discontinued operations on October 1, 1865. In 1861 Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter while Union forces defended it; many local residents took up arms against Confederate troops and some even managed to get past enemy lines to join them. As a result of this attack and several others during the American Civil War (including nearby Fairfax), much activity occurred in and around Manassas Junction that contributed materially to its growth thereafter. This wartime boom led to increased demand for goods produced in nearby Alexandria; accordingly, two warehouses were built adjacent to each other at what is now downtown Manassas Junction between 1861-1863; these new structures helped contribute significantly towards improving living conditions for both locals and travelers alike throughout that era.—Today’s downtown area constitutes one component of modern day MANASSAS JUNCTION!
