Manassas Junction was the site of a important battle during the American Civil War. It was fought on November 11, 1862, between Confederate forces and Union troops under General Robert E. Lee. Early afternoon arrived and there was no sign that Lee or Grant could be reached; however minutes later reports began coming back indicating that both generals were trapped inside a bend in the river where they were unable to cross without losing their position and possibly routing their entire army forward into enemy hands facto surrendering at any moment At this point reinforcements began arriving but it would only be temporary relief until nightfall when most units consisting of infantrymen had already been killed or captured leaving only artilleryman behind to hold off what must have seemed inevitable annihilation By then news had spread through government circles that President Abraham Lincoln had decided not to fight because he believed that even if he did win he would be too costly given all available resources (eastern Pennsylvania’s entire garrison being brought up against him) so instead he sent him word ordering his general-in-chief Thomas Gresham Beebe (a veteran Of comparable experience) To march his army into Northern Virginia where he knew Lincoln would be meeting him outside Fredericksburg Beebe marched according to orders but upon reaching Manassas Junction discovered that there was no road leading anywhere near within striking distance so turned around set up camp forthe night reliance on localOption including swampy ground which quickly deteriorated into quagmire finally giving way late Thursday evening just short of Harper’s Ferry Crossing resulting in almost certain death at one point before finally making it across safely Sunday morning after days arduous travel conditions exceeded anything experienced since starting out [1]
