Manassas is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is located on the north bank of the Rappahannock River, about 5 miles east of Manassas Park and 10 miles west of Falls Church. The town was founded in 1800 by members of the English community that had settled in this area. In 1802, General Robert E. Lee arrived at Manassas Junction to lead an army against Washington and his troops were forced to retire upstream. In 1814, General James Heth's brigade attacked the Americans near Manassas Junction but was repulsed with heavy losses. On November 3, 1814, during the Mexican-American War, French forces under Marshal François Joseph Lachappe besieged and captured Manassas Junction from American defenders led by Colonel David Braddock. Aftermath of this battle resulted in over 60ocentenians (noncombatants) being massacred by Lachappe's men as they marched back into Mexico City with their booty looted and burned down pursuant to Mexican law requiring any foreigners living in Mexico without civilian protection to be put to death or systematically killed as slaves. In 1847–48, when George Washington moved his headquarters from Mount Vernon to create a new capital city called Potomac Valley around Alexandria near Potomac River due to increasing population growth around here (due also to Indian removal policies), he ordered most of Rockingham County - including Manassas - be transferred there for administrative purposes which included creating roads and other infrastructure necessary for development; however much remained within Fairfax County for agricultural production until after World War II when many roads were built through rural areas into larger towns like Arlington or Northern Virginia while little or no development took place beyond those areas remaining within Fairfax County today. The small town grew slowly until the late 19th century when large crops such as cotton were developed here; then came automobiles which beganmoving people away from farms and towards cities beginning in earnest during World War I because it became increasingly difficult for soldiers stationed here without transportation back home to return home once hostilities ceased; finally came industry with electrical manufacture beginning in 1911 becoming more widespread throughout Northern Virginia following construction of electrified railways making it possible for factories closer at hand rather than travelling long distances either uphill or downwind which often created air pollution problems along route corridors rich with coal seams that could provide energy – two factors driving heavier industry further out into surrounding rural areas where soil quality often didn’t meet expectations resulting in plant closings quickly followed by relocations inland close enoughto CSXtracks so that workers could get jobs at nearby rail yards before trains left for work downtown thereby reducing environmental impact on adjacent residential neighborhoods .
