Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 21,878 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manassas is located on the Potomac River and is bordered by Alexandria to the east, Arlington County to the south and west, and Falls Church to the north. The first European settlers in what became Manassas were two families from Holland who arrived in 1634. They named their land "Mansfield" after one of their own men, John Mansfield. One of the early proprietors of this tract was Colonel George McDowell (1718-1799), father-in-law of George Washington and friend and advisor to him during his lifetime. Colonel McDowell may have been instrumental in providing for development near Manassas Colony which later became known as Northern Virginia due to its location on or adjacent to a major waterway accessible from all directions In 1762 an act was passed by Congress entitled An Act for Establishing a Military District including Fairfax County . This act provided for: “That it be lawful for any person within these limits …to build himself up into a habitation” And so began Manassas Development Company Ltd., now Verizon Wireless plc.), one of Northern Virginia's earliest commercial ventures with roots dating back more than two centuries! In 1871 Samuel Troup bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) at present day Park Road Northeast corner of Route 38 & White Oak Lane from Drury heirs; he renamed it Troup's Landing On Potomac! In 1876 James Wirtz built Four Corners House just east of today's intersection Of Routes 38 & Yorktown Pike NE across from modern day VA Water tower; this property became Wirtz' Farmstead Today! pioneers such as James Wirtz brought new life & opportunity to what would become Manassas

Many other famous people have also lived or worked in or around ManASSAS such as Robert E Lee who fought against Union troops during the Civil War; Edwin Hubble who discovered Hubble Space Telescope in1965; Ray Bradburywho wrote Fahrenheit 451 in 1953; Donald Trumpwho has been elected president twice nowand has properties here including Trump Tower and Marine One headquarters.;and more recently Sarah Palin
The Battle of Manassas took place on July 21, 1861, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Union General George McClellan and Confederate General Robert E. Lee fought a one-day battle near the town of Manassas Junction. McClellan's army was outnumbered by Lee's force and retreated after suffering heavy losses. The battle is often considered to be the decisive engagement of the Civil War.
