Manassas is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 17,564 at the 2010 census. It is located 8 miles (13 km) east of George Washington National Cemetery and just outside the Beltway on I-66. The land that now makes up Manassas was first settled by English Catholics in 1607 as part of thelarger colony of Jamestown. By 1612, most of what would become Manassas had been acquired by Sir John White and his men who built Fort Necessity on Muddy Creek to keep Native Americans from raiding their plantations there. In 1795, after protracted negotiations between Great Britain and France over the boundary between North America and Louisiana, General George Washington appointed Colonel James Longstreet to survey an additional 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) along the Potomac River for military use. This tract became known as "Longstreet's Purchase" because it lay within present-day Arlington County. In 1802, Congress passed an act authorizing President Thomas Jefferson to purchase all or any part of the territory west of Baltimore City for $10 million dollars which he did on November 12th, 1802; this free land included much of what would become Manassas including today's ZIP code 75734. The county seat shifted from Fredericksburg to Manassas in 1814 when Prince William County was created from parts of Fairfax and Loudoun counties following the American Civil War. During World War II many factories were located near Manassas including Ford Motor Company’s Richmond facility which produced tanks and other war materiel; Singer Sewing Machine’s finally closed its plants here in 1957 after more than three hundred years production in Fredericktown before moving its operations out into Spotsylvania County where it remains today.
