In addition, Lee had more experienced men available for his attack than Grant did; furthermore, Confederate artillery could fire hexagons (six cannons each) which caused great damage to Union troops and equipment during assaults uphill. Although Lee ordered his army into action early in the engagement, he soon realized that he was outnumbered and outgunned by Grant’s force; therefore, he decided to pull back towards Sharpsburg rather than fight another pitched battle on July 27th. However, this decision led to terrible losses for both sides as General Lee lost over 40% of his army while Grant only suffered 6%. Following Bull Run Ridge Road southward towards Potomac River Arsenal Cemetery were some of America’s bloodiest days; 800 soldiers were killed or died from wounds within 24 hours after reaching that location. It was also here where General James Longstreet made his famous remark about “not losing sight of our objective” which doomed Confederate plans for achieving an unconditional surrender should they be victorious at Bull Run Bridge against numerically superior Northern forces: “If we cross that bridge we will die like men...if we do not crossing it we will be captured alive like animals."
