The town of Manassas, Virginia, was founded in 1781 by General George Washington and his troops during the American Revolution. The town quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most strategic located in the area for military purposes. In 1814, Manassas was named capital of Fairfax County and it remained as such until 1865 when Richmond became the new capital. Manassas experienced several skirmishes during the Civil War including Battle of Gaines Mill on July 9, 1861 which resulted in three Ulysses S. Grant's Regiments suffering major losses and two cannons destroyed. After the war ended, manassas lost some of its importance but continued to be a center for government and defense activities until it was annexed by Arlington County in 1972. Today, Manassas is a small unincorporated community with few residents remaining who live within its boundaries. Manassas began as an agricultural settlement near present-day Alexandria, Virginia which was then part of Augusta County. Washington decided to move his troops away from Alexandria due to lack of food and water supplies and settled them at Hillsborough River where they erected tents for their first winterpresence in America. On January 14th, 1781 General George Washington met with local farmers here to discuss land purchases necessary for artillery installations along the Potomac River that would come into operation during fighting against British forces besieging Fort Frederick on December 16th. A total of 350 acres were purchased from these farmers including 100 acres from John Dunmore which formed what is now called Dunmore Heights today. By February 8th, 1781 all eyes were on General Washington as he set out northeast along ridge line #4 towards Williamsburg following route James Monroe had traveled earlier that year when he crossed overland from Mount Vernon to relieve Fort Frederick garrisoned by British forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Forbes (later Marquis de Lafayette). In anticipation of hostilities commenceing against British forces at Yorktown Peninsula on September 11th (just weeks after GE's inauguration), patriot militiamen had already constructed eight cannon batteries around town while stores were stockpiled upriver at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard ready shouldaction erupt ashore or inland anywhere along the Peninsula not just at Yorktown Junction where Patriot control ended six days earlier due to harassment by Royal Navy warships commanded by Commodore Richard Howe Washington arrived southeast of Williamsburg late on October 13th having marched more than 300 miles/pacing 10 miles per day since leaving Valley Forge Army encampment less than two weeks earlier On October 15th General Charles Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House effectively ending battle lines between Union and Confederate armies resulting in thousands deadincluding many high ranking officers including Generals Casey (of Gettysburg Campaign) & Pickett The surrender also allowed Cornwallis' army to march southward towards Lynchburg Sound without facing any consequences similar to what occurred at Yorktown Junction where Patriot militia burned numerous Lt Cols' uniforms & equipment before withdrawing back inland prior to any formal proceedings taking place This event led directlyto Patrick Henry's famous speech "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" delivered later that day before Congress seeking authorization for President George Washington To call offarmy operations
