In 1871, George Washington Carver patented the first firearm shirt. The shirt was made of a cotton fabric and bore the crest of the United States military. It was not until 1903 that the National Rifle Association (NRA) was founded. In 1937, NRA members became eligible to own rifles and shotguns. Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 23,586 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manassas is located on the Potomac River and has a total area of 21 square miles (55 km2). With an elevation of 4,471 feet (1,524 m), it sits on high ground above the river valley between two ridges of mountains. The first white people to come to this area were those who founded Alexandria in 1701. They named their settlement after General John Manasseh Clarke, one of their number. The first house built in what is now Manassas was built by Captain John Smith in 1607 as a summer home for himself and his family. In 1814, when George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States, he vacationed at nearby Mount Vernon and took pleasure boat rides upriver from Alexandria to Fort Leesburg on Wednesday morning before going into office that day at 12:00 p.m.. On Saturday night he stopped at Fincastle for dinner with his generals before continuing downriver to Fortress Monroe where he spent Sunday night before returning back to Mount Vernon on Monday morning. On Tuesday morning he left for Philadelphia via Middlebrook Gorge and arrived there late on Wednesday afternoon In 1861 during the American Civil War Confederate forces burneddown some buildings near present-day Manassas Village and then destroyed much of Farmington Hills over six days starting September 14th until October 1st because they believed Union troops were planning an attack against them from that direction unprotected by artillery fire or even infantry support across the riverbed between Antietam Creek and Loudoun Heights which lay just outside their lines but still within Union lines across Antietam Creek Valley! Aftermath There are no reports or evidence that any Federal soldiers ever attacked Confederate forces anywhere near today's Manassas village other than adjacent farm fields burning as mentioned earlier during 1861; however all 5 bridges crossing Antietam Creek Valley have been lost since then including 3 over which Federals presumably crossed while attacking Confederates later that year!
