In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate general Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after losing an epic battle against Union General Ulysses S. Grant near Petersburg Heights on April 9th (the day before President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated).

In 1881, Manassas saw its first fire when two men set fire to a lumberyard near downtown. The blaze continued for several hours, damaging more than 50 buildings before it was put out using water hoses and firefighters from nearby jurisdictions. Over time, however, such fires increasingly proved costly and challenging To control; in 1886 they burned down some 30 buildings including many stores and churches before being finally brought under control by local police officers using tear gas grenades after days of battle. Today, Manassas remains an important community with strong cultural roots that continue to attract people from all over Virginia and beyond. Its busy business district offers ample opportunities for shopping, dining and nightlife; while its excellent schools continue providing quality education for children statewide.
