In 1864, Major General George Fitzhugh Lee of the Confederate army proposed the adoption of a bipod as an infantry weapon to improve the soldier's ability to stabilize himself while firing. The first bipods were designed by Lieutenant Colonel John A. Logan and Sergeant James Fenton, and patented on November 15, 1865. The devices consisted of two metal circles that were glued together at one end and was held in place with a screwdriver or other instrument. They were not very successful, but were later redesigned by Captain George Hargrave into what is now known as the "Fitzhugh Lee bipod." The development of rifle grenades also influenced the design of bipods. Grenade launchers could be attached to either side of a rifle for stability, making them useful for engaging targets behind cover. This gave rise to the idea that bipods should also function as grenade launchers when used in tandem with rifles. However, this technology did not come about until after World War II when it was developed into the modern sniper rifle.

Manassas is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 35,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1781 by General James Lees and his army as a staging area for their march to Alexandria, Virginia. In 1814, Manassas became the capital of West Virginia when Congress moved the seat from Potomac Falls to Wheeling, West Virginia. After Union troops burned Wheeling in 1863, Manassas became an important railway junction and shipping port on the Potomac River. The town declined after World War II until it regained its former prominence as a bedroom community for Washingtonians and commuters to D.C.. Manassas has many historical sites including: Fort Lee (1781), Stonewall Jackson's headquarters (1862), Fort Myer (1911), and Arlington National Cemetery (1924). There are also several commercial districts including High Point Shopping Center and Government Center which were developed during the post-war period; as well as newer areas such as Crystal City Park and Reagan National Airport which have been redeveloped since then.

In mammals, bipedalism has developed into a successful way of life because it allows them to interact with different environment and other animals in ways that would otherwise be impossible. For example, a human can walk both forwards and backwards like a dog, whereas a chimpanzee cannot do so because their ape brain does not allow them to use both hands simultaneously for balance purposes (i.e., they rely on bilateral coordination).

The battle took place on October 17,1781, when British General Edward Braddock and his army were retreating from Yorktown. After a hard fought skirmish, the British forces retreated to Winchester. During the American Revolution, Manassas was an important battleground because it lay along the Fairfax-Manassas County line. It also played an important role in 1812 as a result of Napoleons attempt to invade Virginia. The battle resulted in a hand-to-hand struggle between Patriot militiamen and Napoleon's forces that saw over 50 killed and 300 wounded. The Battle of Manassas continues to hold close historical significance because it helped define both sides in the war and set the tone for future engagements. Today, Manassas is a popular tourist destination with its restored buildings and vibrant community spirit.
In 1781, the first permanent English settlement in Virginia was founded at Manassas by Lieutenant Colonel James Montresor and his men. The village grew rapidly, and by 1790 there were over 200 people living there. In 1812, the town voted to secede from Virginia and become a separate state.
