During World War II, Manassas became one of several key crossroads in the area due to its strategic location on I-5 between Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Richmond (the three original metropolitan areas). In 1943 General Eisenhower's Third Army committed itself to operation Market Garden south of Manassas Junction; on 9 October that year US First Lieutenant Samuel Skinner used his artillery piece—the only such weapon in that theater—to shoot down two German planes northeast of town while they were bombing friendly troops positioned nearby at Mine Run Ridge (). With their loss came an opening for Allied forces to move into this sector bypassing German resistance further north; within weeks most of Germany had fallen or been liberated by U2 pilots flying over Allied armies advancing directly into her territory (). One significant event during World War II took place here: on 10 May 1945 Soviet soldiers liberated more than 2,500 Japanese POWs being held at nearby Fort Myer (); these POWs later formed the nucleus of Operation Homecoming (), which led to Japan's unconditional surrender

The town of Manassas began growth around 1820 when two men named John Mason and James O'Brien founded a log cabin on what is now known as West Main Street. By 1830, Manassas had a population of about 25 people and was home to one school and two churches. A small Arsenal was built in 1834 by subscription of citizens for the purpose of garrisoning artillery used by both sides in the war. While development continued around West Main Street and Arsenal Road, it was not until after the American Revolution that manorialism took hold in Virginia with property ownership being based on birthright rather than purchase or annexation. This system allowed for large estates to be acquired through inheritance without having to leave their land empty for years; this also helped explain why so many wealthy Virginians settled in Northern Virginia during the early 1800s despite being barred from doing so by law. In 1792, Captain John Smith discovered what became known as Potomac River Valley while exploring upriver from modern day Alexandria; soon afterward settlers began arriving seeking lands along this valuable waterway which would provide them with access to resources they could use and trade with surrounding nations. After some initial resistance from local landowners who saw these newcomers as competition, many early Virginians eventually came to appreciate the benefits of manorialism and adopted it into their own lives. The Battle of Manassas took place on September 17, 1861, during the American Civil War. Union General Robert E. Lee and Confederate General John C. Fremont fought a three-day battle at Fairfax Station in Fairfax County, Virginia. The Union army had advanced to within five miles of Petersburg before being stopped by Confederate artillery fire. The battle resulted in over 800 casualties on both sides and led to the death of Ulysses S. Grant and the surrender of Lee.
