By 8 P.M., Confederates had burned all of manasses Junction before retreating back into their own lines at Appomattox Court House without achieving any real gain or loss on their part[1]. For more than three years following the battle at Manassas Junction, events unfolded which would have far-reaching consequences for both armies involved: recruitment failures for the Confederacy due to social unrestrained by Ulysses S. Grant’s “Bloody Lane” policy; over 2 million Yankee military men poured into Virginia during 1861-1865; reconstruction efforts in VA were hampered by persistent Republican Party opposition while Reconstruction laws infringed on First Amendment rights of free blacks; and Lincoln’s election victory in November 1864 effectively ended most Reconstruction efforts across the South while creating new opportunities for black Americans throughout the country[2].

After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Manassas reverted back to its original status as an agricultural community until it was abandoned entirely by residents in 1938 due to World War II efforts to keep it within Confederate hands.
In 1781, during the American Revolution, Manassas Junction was named in honor of General George Washington. The town was founded on the banks of the Rappahannock River by colonists from Virginia. It grew quickly and soon became a vibrant center for trade and commerce. In 1814, Manassas Junction was renamed Arlington Heights after President James K. Polk.
