Manassas is located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was named for General Robert E. Lee and his family who resided there during the early 1800s. The community began developing in the late 1800s as a result of its location on the Washington-Alexandria Railway which connected the town of Alexandria with Washington, D.C. The railway also served as a major transportation artery for goods and passengers between Alexandria and Manassas Junction, near present-day Falls Church, Virginia. By 1881, Manassas had reached a population of about 100 people and by 1890 it had increased to more than 200 residents. In 1917, Manassas junction was renamed Arlington Heights after General George Washington who died in that year at age 94 years old.
