Manassas Park is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 14,681 at the 2000 census. It is located on the east bank of the Rappahannock River and borders Arlington to the north and Manassas to the south. The town was founded in 1799 by Capt. John Smith as a temporary fortification during an expedition against Native Americans. In 1803, it became part of Prince George's County and was named for General James Armistead Manassas (1754-1824). The first house in Manassas Park was built in 1812 by Captain John Cooks trading post on the Rappahannock River. The day after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Union soldiers burned down Cook's Trading Post to prevent its capture by Confederate forces under Robert E Lee. Two years later, Alexandria burned down because of lack of supplies brought overland from Northern Virginia. This caused Congress to pass an act providing for military stores for stations along the Potomac River and manning them with artillerymen from nearby Alexandria and Fredericktown opposite Washington D.C.. At first, these detachments were used mainly for harassing Rebel columns traveling upriver; but soon guns began being sent into battle as part of field armies assembled along routes leading from Northern Virginia into Maryland and Pennsylvania to fight against President Andrew Johnson's Civil War efforts. In 1865, Manassas Park became one of three original towns within Prince George's County when it was created from parts of Fairfax County east of Yorktown Road including Westmoreland Heights and Upper Marlboro Heights northeastward along I-495 until all but Westmoreland Heights had been annexed by Arlington Borough (now Arlington). On January 1, 1870 all remaining residents except those living in Westmoreland Heights voted unanimously to join Fairfax County as a separate county with its own government which they did not yet have jurisdiction over due mostly to land annexation disputes between then-Albany Borough (now Arlington) and neighboring Fairfax Borough (now McLean). Manassas Park experienced moderate growth during World War II with mobilization that led to construction of Veterans Memorial Stadium housing more than 50% American troops engaged in combat or training Overseas since 1942 including more than 25% African Americans who worked directly or indirectly with whites in munitions plants near Winchester, Virginia Beach and Annapolis Junction Maryland while also serving as cooks at military barracks located throughout southern VA In 1966 Drury Lane School opened kindergarten through 8th grade followed by two elementary schools before closing due primarily to low enrollment rates however Drury Lane Elementary reopens today grades PreK-8th grades adjacent home school Kingwood Elementary
