One of the earliest target holders in Manassas Park was a tree on the south side of US Route 1. The first shooting took place on July 8, 1851, when two men, John Brown and James Longstreet, killed three cows with shotguns at this location. Bakewell shot off twenty-two rounds from his rifle onto an 1861 Confederate battle flag flown over Fort Sumter in Alexandria Cemetery; it was the only time such shots were fired in Virginia during the war. In 1911 Eugene Richards built a $5 machinegun stand on land that he donated to NRA members for use by them while they hunted deer near Silver Spring Road and Old Dominion Parkway. This stand became known as Bakewell's Stand and is still used today. In 1915 Maximillion Biddle bought seventy acres of land east of Manassas Park and constructed a large rifle range which served as home base for many American shooters including Adolphus Busch and Jesse James during the Wild West period (1881-1892). He also erected a large sniper tower which overlooked much of Menassas Park. The first official competition held at Biddle's range took place on October 14th 1916; it was won by George Armstrong Custer who hit thirteen targets out of eighteen fired without error with his Model 1895 rifle

Manassas Park is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 362 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Anacostia River, just upstream of Washington and Lee University. The first known permanent European settlement in what is now Manassas Park occurred in 1762 when Captain James Ross and his men landed on the present site of Manassas Park after spending several weeks travelling up the Potomac River. The area then consisted of marshland and dense forests. In 1802, Colonel George Scott's brigade under General John Pope moved into the area from Alexandria to take possession of what are now Manassas Heights and Rolling Mill Hill. At that time, there were only a few houses and no visible sign of human habitation other than some scattered trees. In 1812, Congress passed an act providing for erection of a military post at Manassas Park; this post was named for General Robert Ewell (1746-1834), who had served as commander during the War for Independence and been mentioned in Congressional Globe Asks for Information respecting Fort Ewell). Edward Everett (1795-1882) was chosen as Postmaster General at that time so that he could carry out this Act. In 1815-16, members of the 1st Infantry Regiment under Colonel Augustus Herndon built Fort Haldeman on land owned by Captain John Smith near modern day Manor Road and Brooke Roadsteads - these lands later became part of Arlington National Cemetery. On 9 October 1800, President Thomas Jefferson presented Governor James Kapp with a map showing an extensive tract called "Fort Necessity" lying west of Prince George's County within Fairfax County bounded by White Marsh Creek on the north side, Bushy Branch Run on the east side, Loudoun Hills to its southward extent extending to Catonsville Pike on its west border which it crossed over above Rockville Pike; thence southwesterly along said Pike to Long Branch creek flowing into Branch creek aforesaid; thence easterly along said creek to where it opens upon Buzzards Bayou...the whole lots being contain'd within present limits aforesaid [to] which description they have been annexed since 10 October 1800… Map No FR 25789 From: The Records Of The Continental Congress (5th ed.) According to local history books written in the early 21st century, one source says that Nathaniel Greene’s headquarters actually resided not far from where manhattans park now stands but rather across Long Branch Creek from where today’s White Marsh Creek flows into Branch Creek before opening onto Buzzards Bayou – making it much closer geographically to Constitution Hall while still situated far enough away from downtown Washington D.C., thus enabling him more easily control events taking place close by without triggering angry protests or possible confrontations with nearby residents or businesses owners
