Manassas Park is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 8,732 at the 2000 census. It is within the Prince William County government and lying on the western edge of Manassas National Battlefield Park. A detachment of Custer's cavalryman were spotted by Union troops waiting near present-day Old Rosslyn Cemetery; this alerted General Ulysses S. Grant who ordered an attack which failed due to heavy casualties on both sides。 On October 12th 1865, Union general James Longstreet arrived in town after victory at Battle of Gaines Mill and ordered all stores closed so that no Confederate supplies could be transported into or out of town during the bloody siege of Petersburg that followed. In 1881-1882 a new school was built east of Main Street; it burned down in 1915 but was rebuilt with Federal funding and became part of Loudoun High School until it closed in 2002 amid budget cuts..
