The Manassas Park Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was organized in 1892 by members of the Masonic Lodge No. 7, who were then living in Williamsburg, Virginia. The club met at the home of G.H. Armstrong togear, and soon had a rifle range and pistols room established on the property near present-day Route 524. In 1895, the club held its first Annual Meeting at which it adopted a Constitution and By-Laws which remain in effect to this day. In 1912, the club moved to its current location on Fairfax Avenue NE in Manassas Park. At that time membership totaled over 100 individuals; however, by 1922 membership had dwindled to just 14 due to World War I efforts to raise money for war purposes. In 1939, during World War II, the club made an effort to purchase a .30 caliber machine gun from Fairfax Arsenal but was unsuccessful due to wartime restrictions on firearm ownership. However, within two years of the war's end members had regained their lost interest in firearms and resumed operations as a non-profit organization under new name – The Manassas Park Rifle & Pistol Club Incorporated – with an emphasis on recreational shooting activities only. Today (2012), The Manassas Park Rifle & Pistol Club is still active with over 130 members operating rifles and handguns for target practice and recreation within their own private 2 acre property located primarily within Manassas Park boundaries - making it one of Northern Virginia's most popular outdoor shooting locations!
Manassas Park is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The town of Manassas was founded in 1777 by General Edward Braddock and Colonel John Armstrong as a fortified outpost on the Potomac River opposite Upper Manassas. In 1802, General James Longstreet transferred 1,600 men from Alexandria to form the first permanent militia regiment in America east of the Mississippi River, and Fort Necessity became the nucleus of what would become Manassas Park. In 1814, during the War of 1812, Major General William Ewell's brigade attacked a convoy that included Brigadier-General George Pickens' force at Gaines's Mills near Bethesda Church. After laagering for two days under cover of darkness, Pickens ordered his forces into action after learning that British reinforcements were en route. The battle resulted in a rout for Ewell's command and ended with many casualties for both sides; only one man escaped capture. In 1864, Confederate Major General Jubal Early entered Northern Virginia while attacking Harper's Ferry and ran into Union forces led by Ulysses S. Grant at Antietam Creek Bridge over which Union troops had crossed during their retreat from Fredericksburg Campaign two weeks earlier. A fierce engagement ensued resulting in Early's loss of many men and an important bridge across the Rappahannock River; however, it also demonstrated Confederates' resolve to maintain control over Eastern Virginia until they could overthrow Andrew Johnson's regime in South Carolina or gain access to Texas through Mexico City via San Antonio – objectives which failed primarily because Confederate Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson refused to give up their advantage along key railroads west of Richmond assuming these lines would allow Johnson to reach Charleston instead). A post office called "Manasses" was established at Manassas Park on October 25th, 1870; it changed its name to "Manassas Park" on December 12th, 1890s when postal service moved from Alexandria to this site north of Interstate 95 (the present day intersection where I-95 meets Fairfax County Parkway). On November 5th 1984 an arson fire destroyed much valuable equipment insidemanassingparkgovtcourthouse leaving it unusable for many years hasthe building being restored again as Of Counsel Chambers Building located next door . Now used mostly as offices by government officials . According to 2000 US Census data there are now just 7 residents living within manassingpark village limits!
