The city's original name "Manassas" reflected this commercial center role; however, by 1860 it had outgrown that moniker and reverted to its present name without any change to actual physical boundaries between Arlington Heights/Manassas Park proper and other adjacent jurisdictions - another indication that this area had long been considered part of Arlington Heights atop which grew more peripheral communities including Fort Belvoir (later Fairfax), Crystal City (later Arlington National Cemetery), Chantilly (later Ballston Spa), Herndon (now Federal Hill) - all constituent parts thereof until 1965 when those communities were amalgamated into Greater Arlington as defined by then-Virginia Gov.[1] During World War II many civilians resided within ManASSAS PARK Army Airfield at nearby Willow Grove which housed nearly 10 square miles RAF Station Serval operated by North American Aviation(NAA). More than 2 million pieces of aircraft were made here over WWII using Willoughby's Forest Products Cutters(WPFC). Over 100 local companies participated in wartime production including: WPFC Cutters & Saw Works Inc., Bendix Radio Corporation(BRCA), Ford Motor Company(Ford #8686), Radiomanufacturing Laboratory Inc.(RMLI) among others who shared continued production operations following hostilities ceased. In 1947 NAA sold Willow Grove AF to US Airways for $29 million dollars making it America's first large peacetime airport industrial complex[2]. A new Terminal Building was constructed next door featuring checkin counters on both sides of an open concourse flanked by two hangars each capable housing 50 planes each side with apron space for up to 25 additional planes plus taxiways leading to three runways providing crosswinds up to 30 knots going forward/down! All Concourses initially featured metal detectors & bags searching passengers upon arrival while also scanning baggage containers entering/exit serving as prototype for today's Customs Union controlled airports worldwide! This facility quickly proved inadequate due to extreme growth rates hence UA moved all operations elsewhere starting with TWA Continental Airlines' initial lease commencement on July 1st 1948[3], finally concluding operations at Willow Grove AFB on November 15th 1961[4] - one day after George Washington College opened its School Of Dentistry there! Today School OF Dentistry operates independently from recently renovated former Norton Simon Museum Campus located within walking distance northwest along Route 22 just off Interstate 66 across from McDonough High School
