Manassas Park is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is located on the north bank of the Potomac River. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Manassas Park were Native American Indians who hunted and fished in the area. In 1795, General George Washington established a military post here as part of his protection against Native Americans living near Alexandria. The post was called Fort Necessity and served until 1802. In 1814, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry destroyed much of western Virginia and Maryland, leaving about 9% of the state without any landowning white population. The resulting panic caused many businesses to close their doors, including those in Manassas Park. However, most residents managed to rebuild and continue businesses as usual during this difficult time for Virginians. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army from Fortress Monroe northward along the Potomac River towards Washington D.C.. He began construction of an extensive network of trenches around Manassas Park so that he could easily withdraw his troops should battle commence outside of town limits. This plan backfired when Union forces arrived early in 1862 and burned everything within sight before withdrawing back upriver into Fortress Monroe. After the Civil War ended, Manassas Park experienced rapid growth due to its location between two major urban areas – Washington D.C., with its rich culture and history, and Richmond onVirginia’s Eastern Shore where jobs were available for sailors and laborers needed for building up northern Virginia’s new capital city – Richmond (Richmond Heights). Many families moved into Manassas Park during this time period because they could not find similar opportunities elsewhere in Northern Virginia or south central Maryland; these immigrants brought with them their own cultures and traditions which helped make Manassas Park one of the most diverse communities in Northern Virginia at that time! Manassas Park was established in 1755 as a plantation on the Potomac River. The House of Burgesses, located on what is now Manassas Avenue, was built in 1757 by George Washington and his family. The area around present-day Manassas Park was first settled by Native Americans in the late 16th century. In 1676, Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition explored present-day Virginia and arrived at Jamestown before sailing back up the Potomac to North Carolina. Raleigh's landing at Jamestown triggered a colonial revolt against Spanish rule that led to the English conquest of much of Southwest Virginia in 1681. After England lost its colonies in North America during the American Revolution, Manassas Park became part of Fairfax County,Va., which included Richmond and Chapel Hill. In 1871, Congress passed an act establishing Alexandria Township which contained parts of today's Manassas Park. The township was named for General James Armistead Miles who fought with General John Pope at White Sands Creek during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1892, however, Congress repealed sections of the Civil Rights Act that had been approved by President Harrison only two years earlier. This law prevented racial discrimination in public accommodations and required individuals to receive government identification cards listing their race rather than their individual surnames. As a result, many African Americans moved into areas such as Arlington and Fairfax County while other whites continued to live in poverty within Alexandria Township until after World War II when development began there anew The park opened to the public on April 15, 1865 following Confederate General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House four days earlier First Lady Mary Anna Custis founded Stonewall Jackson High School here in 1926 In 1942 Lieutenant Colonel James Forrestal became Secretary of Defense under Franklin D Roosevelt First lady Eleanor Roosevelt served as First Lady from 1945 through 1961 Following her death she was succeeded by Jacqueline Kennedy In 1969 Prince Philip married Princess Royal Elizabeth aged 19 at Holyrood Palace During World War II various housing projects were constructed throughout central Virginia including: Friendship Housing Project (1941), Hampton Roads Housing Authority (1945), Willow Lawn Landing Projects (1948), Beechcroft Manor Development Project (1950s), Riverside Gardens developments near Charlottesville (1959) and then Hunters Point Naval Shipyard housing project off Newport News Harbor(1973). Many residents living close to naval yards were displaced due to construction but they later returned home when those yards closed down
