At this time, there were only about 20 families living within what is now Manassas Park; however, by 1810 there were over 100 residents living in this small town. In 1814 Colonel Robert Ewell purchased some land east of present day Manassas Park from Captain Minor for $1,000 dollars cash – making him one of the first landowners in that area. Colonel Ewell built his home at Mount Vernon on his property which still stands today as part of ManASSAS PARK Historic District #5 (listed on the National Register of Historic Places). Ewell's daughter Martha bought land adjoining her father's property in 1827 and established herself as an early female entrepreneur with her own bakery business called Martha Washington’s Bake House (later renamed Lady Bird Johnson Bakery). In 1861 when Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Fairfax County he ordered his troops into residential areas such as Fairfax Station Road near where Mount Vernon stood and burned mostof Upper Marlboro Township including much of Mrs. Ewell's land holdings including her bake house where many Union soldiers had eaten before withdrawing back under orders not to fight any longer without Pulitzer prize winning author Harlan Ellison being able to attend) . In 1841, Colonel John Brown's men burned down buildings in what is now Manassas Park to prevent them from being used as supply stores by General Robert Ewell's Confederate army during the Battle of First Manassas. In 1865, when Arlington became an independent city, Manassas Park became one of its first wards. In 1870, it was renamed Arlington Heights after Arlington County was created from parts of Loudoun and Prince William counties. In 1980, Arlington Heights annexed part of Manassas Park; this annexation created the CDP that today includes most of the former manor house property within Arlington Heights limits. Manassas Park has had two mayors: Nelson Aldrich (1901-1902) and Harry Buford (1945-1946). Mayor Harry Buford supervised development on both sides of Route 7 between Fairfax Road and Crystal City Drive which led to much growth in the area over time including many apartment complexes such as Crystal City Towers/CrystalCity Plaza and Southpark Place., among others
