Manassas Park is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It lies on the Potomac River and is located about 15 miles east of Washington D.C. The population was 12,000 at the 2010 census. The total area is 8 square miles (19 km²). The first human settlement in Manassas Park was founded by Captain John Smith in 1755. He named the community after General James Manasseh Webb of the Continental Army who had been killed during the Battle of Saratoga. In 1814, General Robert Ewell's army occupied Manassas Park and renamed it for Major-General George Washington as part of his military campaign against Lord Cornwallis' forces in North America. In 1828, President Andrew Jackson moved White House staff and family to nearby Alexandria while he campaigned in Virginia. On November 3, 1828, Jackson attended a service at Stonewall Jackson's old plantation house where he dedicated a new bridge over the Chickahominy River near present-day Arlington Cemetery. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down Union Headquarters at Fort Stevens on Patterson Avenue in Manassas Park after invading Northern Virginia from Maryland Heights across Prince Georges Creek Bridge into Federal territory; this event is sometimes called "the Attack on Fort Stevens." The burning caused great damage to buildings and resulted in the death of two soldiers inside; since no one was charged with arson there has been speculation that Confederate commander Robert Ewell may have ordered it as retaliation for Union troops crossing Prince Georges Creek without permission just before dawn on April 12th that year attempting to reinforce Fortress Lee near Fredericksburg Junction. He also built a number of homes in the area including one known as "The White House" which is now used as a museum. In 1977, ManASSAS PARK COMMISSIONER WILBUR DAVIS signed an ordinance amending zoning regulations to allow for subdivisions within manassed park boundaries
