The name of the park comes from a Battle of Manassas in 1864, which took place near present-day Manassas Park. General Robert Ewell's Confederate cavalry attacked Federal forces under Ulysses S. Grant and drove them back over the Rappahannock River. After the battle, Union General George McClellan ordered his troops to burn down all remaining villages and plantations in Northumberland County as retribution for Ewell's victory. This caused great outrage among Virginians who saw their community destroyed without any cause or compensation. So much so that President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order preventing such vandalism within one year. Consequently, many farmers banded together and formed a consortium to purchasing 6 tracts of land around present-day Manassas Park from local landowners for $3 per acre (about $ today). These new owners then built roads and houses on these properties until 1870 when they sold them all back to their original owners who retained title to them until 1925 – an impressive feat given that there were no public roads or housing developments within miles of what is now Manassas Park! This natural gathering spot became known as "The Spot" because people would picnic here along Lee Highway during summertime before going into town for shopping or other activities downtown. In 1928, when Route 14 was first routed through this area mainline making it easier for motorists traveling northbound from Fredericksburg to reach what is now Manassas Park via I-95 (now called I-495), The Spot became even more popular because it was quickly become one of the few places in Metro Washington where people could find open space between buildings without having to dodge cars parked on both sides of the road! In recent years there have been several attempts by developers to turn The Spot into highrise condos or retail spaces but so far they have all failed due to local opposition led by civic organizations like Save The Spot!
