In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army crossed the Potomac River at Manassas Park to attack Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant near Antietam Creek. The battle resulted in large numbers of Confederate casualties including General Ewell himself who was shot three times and mortally wounded while leading his troops across the river. Afterward, Union forces burned all but two buildings in Manassas Park before withdrawing back to Richmond. The remaining buildings were eventually replaced with new homes and businesses after the war ended. Today, much of what once made up Manassas Park is preserved within its boundaries as part of the Fairfax County Historical District which is also home to many other historical sites such as Arlington National Cemetery and Stonehenge). Grant presidency due to concerns that Grant would be too soft on slavery in America's newersive era with an increasing number of white Americans challenging slavery throughout much of Europe (the Panic of 1873). The Senate voted not to confirm him because they were worried he would resume Reconstruction policies which would reward slaveowners rather than invest in education or other economic development for black Americans across America while allowing freedmen to own land and participate actively in American society without being discriminated against
