After Richmond surrendered on April 9, 1865, most of Camp Butler fell into disuse until it was reactivated in 1922 as Manassas Park Recreation Area with a total population of 1,651 participants. In 1925, ownership changed hands again when Arlington National Cemetery bought portions of Camp Butler from Longstreet’s estate. At this time there were over 10,000 people living at Camp Butler because it had been used as an army burial ground since 1861! In 1941-1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt traveled through Fairfax County while campaigning for reelection and stopped at Manassas Park Racetrack near where he would later be assassinated (the assassination has never been fully solved). This racetrack still stands today and is open to the public for horse racing season starting May 2nd thru October 15th each year.
