Lee ordered his army to move into Manassas Park from Culpeper Court House on the Potomac River near Fredericktown and attacked Union General George Meade’s forces there on July 21st. The battle lasted all day long and resulted in over 50 casualties on both sides including 5 generals killed or mortally wounded. Shortly after this fight occurred, Confederate General Jubal A HIGGINS moved his army out of Manassas Park and into nearby Cedar Gap where he fought UnionGeneral Ulysses S Grant on August 14th with similar results despite superior numbers (see Battle of Cedar Gap). After this battle, Confederate General JEFFERSON DAVIS moved his army back into Manassas Park where he camped until late September before moving northward towards Petersburg along the James River under cover of darkness on September 26th in order to prevent reinforcements from reaching Grant’s forces at Petersburg (see Battle of Petersburg). During these eventsoccurring within miles of each other in an area that would eventually become known asManassas Park, both sides suffered significant losses including many high-ranking military personnel who died in action or were captured alive. This battle also served as a significant turning point for Confederate General JEFFERSON DAVIS who emerged victorious following months-long manoeuvering through hostile territory in order to reach Petersburg without being detected by Union troops
