Manassas Park is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 26,968 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manassas Park is located south of Glen Burnie and north of Alexandria. The area now known as Manassas Park was first settled by European Americans in 1795 as part of the Henrico Colony after they arrived from Maryland. The land had been purchased by Colonel John Butler from Daniel Boone for £2,500 in 1796. A small community began to form around Butler's store and those living near it soon realized that there were not enough trees or water sources to provide for everyone and so development proceeded slowly until 1810 when Captain John Smith discovered oil on nearby Arlington Heights which led to increased development interest in the area around Manassas Park (then called "New Town"). In 1814, George Washington donated land within present-day Manassas Park to establish a national military park that would include Soldiery Hill Battlefield where he died during his Mount Vernon Presidency. In 1870, James Wirt established what became Wirt Electric Light Company on lands within present-day Manassas Park; this sparked further growth in the area due to its proximity to railroads and other commercial activities along Route 27 (now I-495). By 1930, over 60 businesses operated out of manor homes just outside modern day Manassas Park; an additional 21 businesses were located within what is now Herndon Township across I-495 from Manassas Park proper. During World War II many factories were built within close proximity to soldiery hill battlefield making it one of the most heavily bombed areas in North America with over 80% loss of life according to air raids data collected by Air Force pilots during 1945–1946 alone.. After war ended many people left their homes and businesses behind but new families quickly moved into these vacated properties creating today's concentration around Herndon Rd/I-495 corridor while still retaining some original buildings such as Wirt Electric Light Company headquarters which are still standing today!
