Industries that have been important to the local economy include aviation, engineering, printing and publishing, trucking and transportation services. A number of cultural attractions also continue to be popular tourist destinations including presidential libraries and museums as well as downtown which has been designated a national historic district since 1966.
Lynchburg was founded in 1781 by Welsh immigrants. The town was named after General James Lynch, a hero of the American Revolution. The new town grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest in Virginia.
